Why Puppies Make Perfect Practice Before Babies

They’re cute as it gets and so much fun, but there’s no denying puppies are a handful and a half. Believe me, I've signed myself up for it two times over and questioned my sanity both times (enter crooked face emoji). For any gals who are constantly baby hungry (aka: me) or even just ones who know they want to be a mama one day, I’ve rounded up 6 reasons why you should most definitely give dog motherhood a try before jumping head first into real motherhood.

  1. FINANCIAL COMMITMENT You never truly realize how expensive dog ownership can be until you’re the one coughing up the dough. Puppies in particular require a hefty amount of supplies and maintenance, and while it’s fun to prepare and make sure your pup is fully taken care of, it sure isn’t fun to pay for it. From the upfront cost of the pup itself, to the supplies—from a crate and toys to a leash and collar to food, treats and food bowls etc.—to pricy vet bills, it is super important to have the finances necessary to make sure your pup has everything it needs for a happy and healthy life.

  2. TIME COMMITMENT In addition to all that cash money you’ll be spending, let’s not forget about the TIME you’ll need to commit to your furry little creature. Getting a puppy will and really should disrupt your entire schedule and routine. Not only will you need to set aside time to train your pup and help them adjust to their new life, but maybe even more important is the years you will need to dedicate to taking care of them. Ideally you’ll have 10-15 years to look forward to of living life with your pup by your side, and this is not something to taken lightly. This little thing will depend on you fully to take care of and love on them for the rest of their little life, and it’s up to you to be there for them through it all!

  3. SLEEP: A BEAUTIFUL DISTANT MEMORY It’s very likely when you first take your pup home, you’ll quickly be trying to remember what sound sleep actually feels like, because you probably won’t be getting much! From middle of the night potty breaks to possible accidents to general puppy things like whining and refusing sleep, you likely won’t be sleeping through the night or sleeping in for a solid little while.

  4. HAWK EYES, ENGAGE When your pup is teething, working on house training, and just generally being a puppy, you’ll learn it’s best to watch them like a hawk to avoid accidents to clean up, beloved items destroyed, or traumatizing (and expensive) emergency vet visits. Basically like having a toddler, super fun.

  5. FREEDOM AIN’T FREE While it may not be illegal to leave your pup at home alone, you will definitely have to adjust your schedule to their needs. From meal times to potty breaks and everything in between, it’s your job to be there for them when they need you (or hire someone to be there!) Plans for long work days or vacations are necessary and oftentimes the most inconvenient part of being a dog mom.

  6. DESPITE ALL OF THESE THINGS, THEY’RE WORTH IT ALL They are expensive, needy, occasionally annoying and sometimes frustrating, but the love you’re sure to feel for your pup makes you forget it all. Endless joy, unconditional love, constant laughs and all the fun, the world doesn’t deserve dogs and may we never forget how lucky we are to love and be loved by them.

Here’s to all the #dogmoms out there who are working hard so their dogs can live their best lives!
